Recently i had one of the more unusual things happen in real estate. My first completed rehab house i did had a weird incident during the sales process. My buyer was a woman getting a divorce and during the property inspection a nosy neighbor who had been a pest came over insisting there was a problem with the plumbing. well there had been, but we had spent about $900 fixing that problem. Anyways the soon to be ex husband decided to pay a plumbing company he was friendly with $275 to run a camera through the pipes to check it out. well they claimed there was a break in the pipes underneath the kitchen floor and it would have to be dug out and they politely provided an estimate of $5,100 to fix the problem. now this was being communicated from the ex husband to the buyers agent to my listing agent then to me. well i told them i need to see the tape of the break and get another estimate for repairs. well my regular plumber said that if they were correct he would do the job for $1500 but he needed to see the tape to make sure of the location. well my plumber is a relative of my head maintenance man and he had been in the house already. when he saw the tape he said it didnt appear to be the right plumbing system for my house and at the end of the tape when the camera was pulled out of the kitchen sink the countertop and cabinets were different than what were in my house and then the camera was set down on a shag carpet, which we would never use, and certainly not have in a kitchen where we use ceramic tile most of the time. so this guy was up to same strange game. my agent insisted we back out of the sale and we did. it took two more weeks to get another contract on the house and we are set to close this coming monday. i guess the moral of the story is you never know who you can trust.
